The Art of Gathering: Connection Over Perfection with Adriane Stuebs

EPISODE 48

“Meaningful gatherings don’t happen because everything’s perfect. They happen because someone decides connection matters.”

The Art of Gathering: Connection Over Perfection

What if the most memorable gatherings have nothing to do with fancy food, spotless homes, or Pinterest-perfect tablescapes?

In this episode, Adriane shares the biggest takeaways from Priya Parker’s book The Art of Gathering and why it completely changed the way she thinks about hospitality, friendships, family dinners, church events, and even business meetings.

From taco nights with friends to mentoring younger couples, Adriane unpacks one powerful question every gathering should answer: Why are we really here?

She also shares practical ideas for hosting with less stress, creating deeper conversations, and making guests feel genuinely seen and welcomed.

Why Are We Really Here?

The clearer the purpose, the more memorable the gathering.

Are we celebrating a new beginning?

Are we helping one another survive motherhood?

Are we celebrating someone’s birthday?

Are we encouraging one another?

Are we welcoming someone new?

Top Tips from Great Hosts

Here are five words of wisdom from great hosts:

  1. Make sure people know exactly what to expect.
  2. Greet people intentionally – make every guest feel appreciated for coming
  3. Introduce people thoughtfully.
  4. Create meaningful questions.
  5. End the gathering intentionally.

*Even Jesus was gathering people often. Jesus taught on hillsides, sat around tables, attended weddings, shared meals, welcomed strangers, gathered disciples. He created space where people felt seen, known, and loved.

Christian hospitality is not entertaining, impressing, or performing. It’s welcoming and serving our neighbors where God has placed us.

Common Hosting Mistakes

And here are five common mistakes people make when hosting:

  1. Are you trying to impress people?
  2. Are you making it all about the food? (food matters, but it isn’t connection)
  3. Was there no purpose to the gathering?
  4. Are there too many people there?
  5. Are you being just the host and not a participant?

Gathering Tips from Adriane

  • Don’t wait until your house is perfect.
  • Don’t wait until life slows down.
  • Don’t wait until you bought all the new furniture.
  • Just gather.
  • Start by inviting one person for coffee or dinner.

Meaningful gatherings don’t happen because everything’s perfect. They happen because someone decides connection matters.

Just maybe the gathering you almost talked yourself out of hosting is exactly the gathering someone else desperately needed.
