When Hustle Becomes an Idol with Adriane Stuebs
Have you ever caught yourself feeling guilty for resting? Or felt like you have to earn your worth through productivity?
This episode dives into our culture of constant motion and what happens when our work begins to take center stage.
We’ll talk about the importance of Sabbath, the gift of slowing down, and how to find your identity not in what you do — but in who you are in Christ.
‘If the devil can’t make you bad, he’ll make you busy.’ That’s something we need to be mindful of as Americans because we do glorify the hustle. The devil doesn’t show up with pitchforks and obvious temptations. Sometimes he fills our lives with noise, endless good things that quietly keep us from the best things.
When we’re too busy, too distracted to notice what’s happening in our soul, we stop resting, we stop praying, we stop listening, and stop seeing what God is doing around us.

When we remove God from the picture, we start believing a lie: a lie that our worth, our future, and our security depend on us. And that’s when we can’t stop working.”

Adriane Stuebs – Podcast Host, Owner of Shine Realty
I can’t understand how life has become so much easier than generations gone by. We have microwaves, cell phones, dishwashers, drive-thru, car washes, robot vaccumes, dinners that come in a box, washing machines…yet we’re busier than ever. How does that make sense?!

Scripture Inspiration
WORK IS MEANT TO BE A BLESSING
“The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” -Proverbs 13:4
“All hard work leads to profit, but mere talk leads to poverty.” -Proverbs 14:23
“Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread: but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.” -Proverbs 12:11
Every time we save time, we tend to just fill it with more work. We think ‘Oh, good. I can get even more done.’ But somewhere along the way we stopped asking what we were doing it for.
We’ve traded rest for productivity, and we call it success. But God calls it idolatry. God calls it idolatry when our hearts bow to anything but him.
~ Adriane Stuebs
“Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings;” –Proverbs 22:29
“May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us -yes, establish the work of our hands.” -Psalm 90:17
GOD WILL MEET ALL OUR NEEDS. WE CAN REST IN HIM.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 4:19
“Open wide your mouth, and I will fill it.” -Psalm 81:10
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” –Matthew 11:28
“‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed–or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'” -Luke 10:41-42
GOD CREATED REST.
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.” -Genesis 2:2
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” -Exodus 20:8
“Be still, and know that I am God.” -Psalm 46:10
Practical Tips for Slowing Down
- Guard your quiet time. Start your day with Jesus.
- Set boundaries with technology. Adriane recommends the Clear Space app
- Say no when you need to. Every time you say yes to something, it costs us something (time, presence, peace).
- Pray before committing. Ask God if this is my assignment.
- Remember the Sabbath. Keep church and spiritual rest as a non-negotiable.
- Remember God provides. He is the giver of all things.
- Be still and know He is God. Enjoy your work, but also rest and trust in Him. Not in your hustle and striving.
Work was supposed to bring glory to God. Instead we often make it about us–our performance, our success, even our identity.
